Our instructors strive to teach Capoeira Malês students the best techniques. Their purpose is to develop qualified capoeiristas committed to the values and preservation of capoeira as an art and community. They welcome students of all levels, including those just looking to explore and learn about capoeira.

Contra Mestre Lua Branca

Waldecir de Souza, better known in the capoeira world as Lua Branca, was born and raised in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. He developed an interest in capoeira at the age of six and studied for many years in his hometown. Lua has performed with numerous Afro-Brazilian dance companies throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Asia and Mexico. He has been teaching classes, workshops and attending batizados all over the world since 1997.

In 1994, he moved to Vitoria, Brazil to train and improve his technique and understanding of the unique Afro-Brazilian martial art, capoeira. He participated in many rodas and batizados throughout Brazil and in 1995, he obtained his Professor cord and began teaching.

In 1997, he was invited to participate in an international capoeira event in Vancouver, B.C. Lua decided to stay on and teach Capoeira in Canada. In August of 2000, he was awarded his Contra Mestre's cord. In 2003. Contra Mestre Lua chose to continue his training under the supervision of Mestre Curisco. Today contra mestre Lua and mestre Curisco have students in Brazil, USA,Mexico and Canada.

Professor Nego

Nego’s involvement with Capoeira began surrounded by friends in 1993 on a dirt lot in Ipatinga, MG Brazil. From there his interest for Capoeira began to grow. Inspired by Mestre Curisco, he began to participate in many rodas and Capoeira events in Brazil.

In 1999, Nego obtained his Professor cord and began teaching. His love for Capoeira brought him to México in 2000 where, at the age of 20 he founded a Capoeira group and organized the first ever International Batizado and Encounter to take place in Guadalajara. In México Professor Nego learned the value of leading a group and ways he could inspire love for Capoeira in his students.

His journey did not end in Mexico; in 2002 he was invited by contra mestre Lua Branca to visit Vancouver, BC Canada and participate in an International Capoeira event. Vancouver became his new home and he began teaching and training with Lua Branca. He was inspired continue improving his art. Today, as a student of Mestre Curisco, Professor Nego leads Grupo Capoeira Malês in Vancouver, BC.

Professora Tigresa

Professor Tigresa was born March 7th, 1978 in Coronel Fabriciano, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. She began studying capoeira with her brother, Mestre Curisco at age 12. At age 16, she graduated to Instructor and began teaching. She graduated to professor at the age of 17, and she was hired by Ipatinga’s city hall to lead the “Sportive and Cultural Project”, helping children and teenagers turn to sports rather than “street-life”. Professor Tigresa managed this project for 5 years with outstanding results.

Professor Tigresa introduced Capoeira to the 2000 Open Games held in Minas Gerais. Following this, she coached the Capoeira Team representing Ipatinga City in the State Games, aka JIMI. Her team won the championship 3 consecutive years, and Professor Tigresa was recognized as a Capoeirista Highlight by sports press. In 2000 she was asked to manage the first Brazilian National Capoeira Tournament in Ipatinga, Brazil.

Today, Professor Tigresa teaches Capoeira in Florida, in several communities, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Tamarack, and Coral Springs. She provides people the opportunity to learn about Brazilian culture and the art of Capoeira. Professor Tigresa has been learning and teaching Capoeira for more than 15 years. She thanks God, her family and friends and, among all, to Mestre Curisco – her brother – for the support during all her years of hard work.
