Capoeira is inseparably linked to the struggle for freedom. Capoeira was born through past struggles of the oppressed, and continues to offer a way for individuals to become one with themselves and their surroundings. Our Capoeira is founded upon teaching respect, responsibility, safety, street-smarts, and freedom.

Capoeira Malês is named for a famous slave uprising in Salvador de Bahia, which occurred in 1835. While the rebellion was violently crushed, it was also the turning point in the history of Brazil. In the aftermath, Brazilians were forced to confront the realities of slavery, causing laws to be enacted which gradually led to slavery's full abolishment in 1888.
